We completed one of New Zealand's ten Great Walks - not by walking, but by paddling through the Whanganui River for three days, covering 87 kilometers of stunning natural beauty. This unique journey gained Great Walk status for its significant Maori history and it's the only Great Walk where you can stay in a Marae (a traditional meeting ground and focal point for Maori communities).
